'. JPEG ' (some use the term '.jpg'):
Example: photo.jpg or photo.jpeg
- this is how the file name looks like.
This is a format which permits to compress your photo into a
smaller file so that it does not take much space. You must scan your
photo with a scanner, and then save it. For the web, it has to be COMPRESSED
into a .jpg.
There are many different file formats for photos. Some
are appropriate for printing, some for animation, etc.
For the web, a normal photo has to be compressed enough so that you
can see it quickly on your screen.
When you turn a photo into a JPEG or JPG format, you can choose the
level of compression. The less compressed, the better the quality, but
the longer to download. Major graphic programs (such as Photo Shop)
offer you the option to save your photo in different formats including
JPEG or JPG. Some have the option 'Save for the Web' which makes it
even easier. Some programs such as Ulead Smart Saver Pro are aimed to
this type of action.
If you send us a photo via Internet, save
it into JPG or JPEG or 'For the Web' first, Choose a compression level
which still gives you a good quality image. Then E-mail it to us as
an attachment. You will find the 'attachment' option at the top of the
page of most web based e-mail such as Hotmail. If you use Outlook Express
or similar, you will find it at the top of the window as well. Just
click on it and follow the instruction. It is made very easy.
Do not send large files via e-mail. Compress
your photos. Here is a good example.
Go there and click on the small photos ('thumbnails'). you will see
them larger. The large photos are around 50kb (50 000 bytes). Before
JPG compression they were
between 2 and 4 Mb (4 000 000 bytes.).
If you take the photo with James Brown, the small thumbnail is 150x110
pixels
and its 'size' is 3 123 bites (3 kilobites). Click on it. The large
photo
is 700x469 pizels and its size is 53 943 bites (53 kilobites).
Do not send bigger photos. For your
web page you reduce them at 250 pixels wide , unless you want
a whole photo gallery like the one you have just seen.
If you want to send
many photos, send many E-mails please, otherwise, it takes ages for
me to download your E-mail... and they may never arrive too!
Same apply to music
files (in MP3 format).
You can also save the photo - saved in
this JPG format - on a disk and mail the disk to us.
If you do not have an appropriate program,
try to go to ACDSEE web site I recommend this program which is a fantatic
photo viewer and displays almost all the existing files format, and
it converts into several formats including .jpg.
Try
and Buy ACDSee !
This is free advice - ACDSee does not pay me for that.
I really think it is a great program.
Price is between $35 and $100.
You can download a trial version for free.
So you have no excuse not to send me your photos
in .jpeg pr. jpg now!
